Today at the Mobile World Congress, Chinese Gionee has launched its Gionee S8 flagship smartphone, previously leaked. The new Gionee S8 features a 3D Touch display, similar to the one found in Apple’s latest iphones. As part of a re-branding exercise, Gionee has launched the S8 handset with the company’s new logo.
The newly branded Gionee S8 packs a metal body design with a 5.5-inch 1080p Full HD AMOLED display covered by 2.5D arc glass and protected by the 4th generation of Corning Gorilla Glass. The device is powered by MediaTek Helio P10 Octa-core 2.0GHz processor paired with 4GB LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB of internal storage, with no microSD option. The Gionee S8 hosts a 3,000mAh battery that supports fast charging technology with the super-fast USB-Type C port.
Gionee has equipped the S8 with decent cameras. There is a 16-Megapixel rear camera with PDAF, Laser-focus and an impressive f/1.8 aperture, ideal for low-light conditions. The rear camera can film 4K videos. There is also an 8-Megapixel front-facing camera which uses the screen as a flash. The S8 also has a front-facing fingerprint scanner, and is embedded with AKM4941 HD recording chip that uses the two highly sensitive microphones, the S8 allows users to capture videos with clear and high quality sound.
The Gionee S8 runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Amigo 3.2 UI on-top. The handset supports 4G+ and dual standby (4G+4G) with dual SIM connection. There is Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. The S8 also supports Dual WhatsApp accounts, as most smartphones do. The Gionee S8 measures 154.3 x 74.9 x 7mm and weighs 147.2g.
