Nvidia has just disclosed the technical specifications of the upcoming RTX 4090 Ti in the company’s latest announcement.
Yes, the Nvidia Geforce RTX 4090 has piqued our interest. Yes, it will be ready in a matter of weeks. Yes, it’s almost certainly going to be a complete beast of a GPU, propelling everyone to new 8K gaming levels.
But there’s another, as-yet-unannounced graphics card that has piqued my curiosity. Technically, there are two – I’d still like to see a more affordable RTX 4070 – but I’m going to focus on the probable new flagship Nvidia is working on the RTX 4090 Ti.
The RTX 4090 has indeed been confirmed to employ Nvidia’s ‘AD102’ GPU processor, and the two RTX 4080 models will utilize the AD103 and AD104 processors. However, the AD102 processor that powers the RTX 4090 isn’t the main module of the AD102, thus it doesn’t have access to the entire set of CUDA cores that the chipset is capable of employing.
This is standard procedure for chipmakers; after all, it’s inexpensive to mass-produce one microchip for two distinct GPUs than two wholly different chips. However, now that we are aware of the specifications of the AD102 chip, Nvidia may have unwittingly revealed exactly how powerful the RTX 4090 Ti based on the AD102 may be.
Let’s look at the numbers quickly. The RTX 4090 will come with 16,384 CUDA cores, whilst AD102 chip can have up to 18,434 cores – 71% more than the GA102 processor present in the current generation RTX 3090 Ti. Naturally, there are additional Tensor and ray-tracing cores.
Because the RTX 4090 has the entire 24Gigabytes of VRAM that the AD102 has, we could have a 12.5% gain in efficiency if nothing else is changed. That seems realistic to us; the RTX 3090 Ti outperformed the ordinary 3090 by 10-15% in most categories, which would be typical with past generations.
The RTX 4090 does employ the AD102’s specified maximum increase clock of 2.52GHz, but just don’t expect greater clock speeds from the 4090 Ti except Nvidia has a hidden AD101 chipset in the works. Nonetheless, a 4090 Ti with a comprehensive AD102 chip will undoubtedly be one of the greatest graphics cards ever produced.
Nvidia RTX 4090 Ti Release Date
When might this future GPU be available? I have no idea – Nvidia has been very secretive about this, and only revealing some announcements and launch dates for both the RTX 4090 and 4080. Still, the RTX 3000 series is becoming more affordable, and even those cards will most likely become even more affordable once the RTX 4000 is available, therefore if you need to update and want to get a good deal on a graphics card, keep an eye out.
