The pro camera system on the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is designed to push computational photography even further, thanks to the introduction of Photonic Engine, which according to Apple, it improves mid- to low-light performance throughout all camera systems via a deep integration of hardware and software. These features are only available on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, not the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 plus.

Apple states, that the iPhone 14 Pro takes computational photography one step further with the introduction of the Photonic Engine, which provides a significant improvement in the range of mid- to low-light performance in photographs captured by all four cameras thanks to to the integration of hardware and software.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro series features Dynamic Island, Always-On Display, and 48MP Camera

The improvement ranges from up to 2x on the Main camera to up to 3x on the Ultra Wide camera to up to 2x on the Telephoto camera to up to 2x on the TrueDepth camera. This significant improvement in quality is made possible by Photonic Engine's ability to apply Deep Fusion earlier in the imaging process. This allows for the delivery of extraordinary detail, the preservation of subtle textures, improved colour, and the maintenance of additional information within a photograph.

The Pro line-up now includes, for the very first time ever, a brand-new 48-megapixel Primary camera with a quad-pixel lens that automatically adjusts to the shot that is being captured, as well as sensor-shift optical image stabilisation of the second generation.

The quad-pixel sensor combines so each four pixels into one giant quad pixel equivalent to 2.44 m, resulting in exceptional low-light capture and keeping photo size at a manageable 12MP. This is accomplished by combining every four pixels into one large quad pixel.

A 2x telephoto setting is also made possible by the quad-pixel sensor, which makes use of the sensor's middle 12 megapixels to capture full-resolution images and 4K videos without the use of any digital zoom. This provides excellent visual quality at a convenient focal length, making it ideally suited for use with functions like the Portrait mode.

In addition, professional processes can benefit from the quad-pixel sensor's ability to optimise detail capture in ProRAW. And because to a new machine learning algorithm that was developed exclusively for the quad-pixel sensor, the iPhone can now shoot in ProRAW at 48MP with an incredible degree of detail, making it possible for professional users to implement new creative processes.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max Camera Features

The new iPhone 14 series come with an additional upgrades and features available for professional camera systems that include the followings:

  • The new 12MP Ultra Wide camera has pixels measuring 1.4 micrometres, which results in photographs that are crisper and have more detail. This enhances the outstanding macro photography capabilities of the device.
  • A telephoto camera with better optics and a zoom factor of three times.
  • A brand-new front TrueDepth camera that features an aperture of 1.9, resulting in improved low-light performance for both still images and video. When autofocus is used for the first time, the camera is able to focus even more quickly, even in dim light, and take group photos from a greater distance.
  • A brand-new Adaptive True Tone flash that has undergone a comprehensive overhaul and now features an array of nine LEDs that switch between different patterns depending on the focal length that is selected.
  • Powerful computational photography features such as Night mode, Portrait mode with Portrait Lighting and Night mode Portrait images, Photographic Styles that allow you to tailor the appearance of each photo, and Apple ProRAW.
  • Even when video is being shot in the thick of the action, the resulting footage will have a remarkably smooth appearance thanks to the new Action mode's ability to compensate for considerable shaking, motion, and vibrations.
  • Cinematic mode is now accessible in both 4K at 30 frames per second and 4K at 24 frames per second.
  • workflows for video production at the professional level, including ProRes3 and Dolby Vision HDR from beginning to end.
  • Even while video is being shot in the thick of the action, the resulting footage can have an amazingly smooth appearance thanks to a new mode called Action. This mode compensates for considerable shaking, motion, and vibrations.
