Japan Industrial Partners who currently owns 95% of the Vaio brand has introduced its very first smartphone, naming it “VAIO Phone”. VAIO (Visual Audio Intelligent Organizer) was originally a brand of Sony Corporation, introduced in 1996. Sony sold its PC business to the investment firm Japan Industrial Partners in February 2014 as part of a restructuring of the corporation to focus on mobile devices. Sony maintains a minority stake in the new, independent company, which currently sells computers only in Japan. Japan Industrial Partners currently owns 95% of the Vaio brand whereas Sony Corporation only owns 5%.

 

The VAIO Phone (VA-10 J) has a similar design to the 2012 Nexus 4 with its front and back black glass, glossy surface finish.

The Vaio Phone has a 5 inch 720 × 1280 HD, TFT IPS LCD display, powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM. It comes with 16GB of expandable internal storage via microSD up to 64GB.

The new Vaio Phone is equipped with 2500mAh non-removable battery. It has a 13 Megapixel rear camera with flash and 5 Megapixel front-facing shooter. The device runs Android 5.0 Lollipop. It measures 141.5 x 71.3 x 7.95mm and weighs 130g.

The device supports LTE (2000 / 1800 / 800 MHz), 3G (2100 / 800 MHz), Bluetooth v4.0, Wi-Fi IEEE802.11 a/b / g/n, GPS and has Acceleration and Proximity sensors.

The Vaio Phone will be available via Japanese carrier B-Mobile on March 20th for JP ¥4,000 (approx $35) per month with unlimited data. The device will also be offered as SIM-Free (Contract-Free) for JP ¥51,000 approx (approx $420).
